Maximus Clarke’s 3DOLATRY series of 3D portraits will be among works by 28 emerging artists on view at NYC’s newest art fair, Portal, debuting during Frieze Week at the landmark Federal Hall in lower Manhattan.
New 20″ x 20″ C-prints of the 3DOLATRY portraits, which were first shown in a smaller format at Brooklyn’s Devotion Gallery in 2011, have been created for the exhibition. Portrait subjects include writers William Gibson and Maud Newton, musician Chris Ianuzzi, designer Michael Doyle, actress and model Lindsey Case-Hayes, and the artist himself.
The 3DOLATRY images draw on Clarke’s background in film, with an expresssionist lighting style evoking noir cinema and the era of black-and-white screen idols. They address the artist’s preoccupation with the formation of the individual self in a world of technological alienation and visual overload.
Portal, a new art fair from 4heads – the nonprofit behind the Governors Island Art Fair – will be open to the public May 4-10, from 10am-5pm daily.
